Australia - fence by the sea - case study

Pole position for Plascoat's PPA 571.

Plascoat PPA 571 has proved to be the coating of choice for over 300 kilometres of fencing poles that stretch across the desert of Dubai. Two lengths of two metre high fencing stretching 160 kilometres across the desert have been erected to provide protection for buries gas pipes against damage from vehicles and other passing traffic.

PPA 571 is widely specified in the Middle east due to the harsh environment. Coatings have to withstand extreme fluctuations between heat and cold as well as high humidity and desert condition sandstorms. Polyester, galvanised and PVC coatings do not survive for long in these conditions and require frequent replacement. One of the earliest fences to be coated in PPA 571 was constructed nine years ago in Dubai. It has shown no evidence of corrosion whatsoever. The PVC coating nearby has already deteriorated.

Now much of the fencing in the area is coated in Plascoat PPA 571.

In the USA one fencing manufacturer has converted to functionalised polyolefin coatings such as PPA 571 due to the long term performance benefits. They have found that the salt spray corrosion and the abrasion rate is half that of standard coatings and the fading rate is 1/20th.

Plascoat PPA 571, a polyolefin elastomer meets the requirements of the ASTM (American Society for the Testing of Materials) for both fencing mesh (F668) and framework (F1063). It is one of the most environmentally friendly coatings available on the market today - containing no TGIC, no phthalates, no halogens, no heavy metals, no VOCs, and no isocyanates.

Plascoat PPA 571 for fencing - Nottingham

The Nottingham Tennis Centre in one of the foremost complexes of its kind in the UK. In order to meet playing demand the centre undertook a project to increase the facility with the addition of eight further grass courts, thus requiring significant new chain-link and other fencing items. The criteria for the new courts were that the fence coating should be durable, have excellent adhesion and have aesthetic appeal in terms of gloss and colour.

Plascoat PPA 571 is a high performance costing powder that provides very long lasting, tough vandal resistant finish that met the criteria of the LTA. The coating is suitable for all manner of external applications on steel and aluminium without the need of a primer. Not only is the coating highly durable – offering a high level of resistance to UV rays, weather, contaminants, chipping and vandal attack – but its high level of flexibility (800% elongation to break) has identified it as an emerging wire fencing industry standard. The PPA 571 coating has been described as "one of the most pleasing aspects of the extension project".

Plascoat PPA 571 withstands the harsh environment of the Middle East.

Plascoat PPA 571 coated fencing in Dubai was recently inspected after over eight years in an environment of high temperature, UV, saltiness and of potential abrasion from sand.

The inspection revealed that the coating had maintained its gloss, colour and mechanical properties and is expected to outlast all alternative coatings.

PPA 571 for swimming pool fencing

There has been an increase in demand for protective coatings for fencing and barriers that are resistant to chemical, water and UV attack. This demand has been driven by new legislation and guidelines, aimed at reducing the number of water-related accidents in domestic and public swimming pools. It is now a legal requirement in some US states, France (AFNOR NF P90-306) and Australia to install safety barriers. The European Parliament is now considering legislation, which will mean that all swimming pools will require fencing or another form of suitable protection to prevent children from accessing the edges of a pool without supervision.

Plascoat's PPA 571 was the industry's first thermoplastic polymer alloy coating to provide a long-lasting tough coating for exterior applications and is now proving to be the coating of choice for new installations of barriers and fencing around swimming pools.

PPA 571 has become the standard for long lasting protection in such environments. PPA 571 is totally resistance to swimming pool chemicals including chlorine, which makes it the ideal choice from a technical view point. From a users view-point PPA 571 has a warm, tactile feel and is available in a wide range of colours and, more recently a number of new finishes which will minimise the risk of the barriers appearing unsightly around the pools. For public swimming pools, where wear and tear on the coating can be at its highest, PPA 571 offers maximum protection from chipping and damage which means an extended life over alternative substrates.

The key benefits of PPA 571 include long-term adhesion (without the need for a primer), excellent edge coverage and extremely high levels of resistance to impact, abrasion, stress cracking, weather and pollutants and chemicals.

PPA 571 is also one of the most environmentally friendly coatings available on the market today boasting no TGICs, no phthalates, no halogens, no heavy metals, no VOCs and no isocyanates.

PPA 571 is available for both fluidised bed and electrostatic spraying (powder coating).
