Is it Necessary to Apply Plascoat PPA 571 over Galvanised Steel?

In certain circumstances it can be possible to eliminate the need for galvanising.

The toughness and impact strength of Plascoat PPA 571 means that it is more resistant to damage through to the substrate surface than wet paints or polyesters.

The adhesion of Plascoat PPA 571 on mild steel will limit the spread of corrosion - even when damaged.

The adhesion to grit-blasted mild steel is excellent.

The quality of galvanising can vary and "gassing" may occur. Without a multistage chemical and heat pre-treatment the level of adhesion can therefore vary with the quality of the galvanised layer.

Plascoat PPA 571 has a long history of protection over mild steel with no reported failures in service.

There is concern in some countries that the Zinc from galvanising can accumulate in the soil. Plascoat PPA 571 contains no Zinc or heavy metals.

Galvanising is suitable when there are areas of the metal that are difficult to coat with powder -
e.g. the inside of lamp or sign posts

See "PPA 571 - Pre-treatment over Galvanised Steel" and "Gassing when coating over galvanised steel"
